Jim Maloney No-Hitter, Reds vs Cubs '65

This one is just a great deal of fun. MLB at You Tube is doing a bang up job of posting vintage games in the last 6-9 months. They started out uploading a plethora of excellent playoff games of 1970s, '80s vintage, etc. With offerings like this, they've really outdone themselves. For the addictive baseball nerd, you get the sights and sounds of a mid-1960s Major League Baseball game, and can about smell the cigar smoke and peanut aroma at Wrigley Field, or Gordy Coleman's armpits (damn HOT temps, by all appearances on the field). And you get to see Johnny Edwards catch Jim Maloney's no hitter (BBRef box). History! Hot Damn! Next up, I fully expect MLB to slap on a Seattle Pilots versus the Minnesota Twins contest from 1969, if they can pull that one out of their nether regions...

If you were to go back on You Tube to view the comments for this video, you could see some on-point commentary regarding how Wrigley Field, and, indeed, the playing of the game, look as if it was a contest played in 2013. Baseball looks the same today as it did 48 years ago, other than the more physically developed bodies on display now. Billy Williams and Ernie Banks look like greyhounds, Leo Cardenas looks as if he needs a sandwich, while even Pete Rose looks oddly svelte, and not batting in such a deep crouch (see 20 minute mark) as you would see him employing seven years later (YouTube game link, same teams).

Besides Banks and Frank Robinson, Ron Santo, et. al., it really is very cool to see Vada Pinson batting in his prime, to see what he actually looked like at the plate. I sure didn't remember, and I know I saw him play in his last season (1976?). A guy with some impeccable, Hall Of Fame caliber numbers, dare I say.

I'm open to debate on this, but you probably couldn't compare a video tape of the Cincinnati Royals versus the Chicago Bulls from '65 for instance, and lay it across a digital replay of the Minnesota Timberwolves against the L.A. Lakers tonight and say the NBA game hasn't changed substantially. For God's sake, I still remember seeing Boston's Dave Cowens play a very effective game as a 6'8" center for Boston in the '70s.

Some things shouldn't be mentioned, especially if they tend to date oneself...

But enough of my prattle. I hope you are as jazzed as I am to see this.

Keep on keepin' On!!
